Summer Reading

This summer I read The Handmaid's Tale and 1984 for my reading assignment. I was extremely intrigued by each one for different reasons. The Handmaid's Tale made me feel as if what happened in the story could possibly happen in the near future since our world is currently going through an overpopulation crisis. Many of the economic issues in the story could be a result of overpopulation and therefor makes it seem more realistic and relatable.
However, I couldn't relate to 1984 as much as I related to The Handmaid's Tale because the story seemed drastic and vague.
What I found most interesting was that each author explained how in their visions of the future, human enjoyment was unacceptable. Orwell and Atwood made the assumption that by giving people the freedom to do what they love it would create anarchy and ultimately ruin the structure of everyday life, when in reality the controlling governments behind these stories are the ones that are truly corrupt.
